Andrea’s teaching philosophy draws on her love for collaborating with performers and students to create pieces that will showcase their strengths. As a young dancer, the hypercritical world of dance has left several dents in her life, including body image, not fitting the dancer mold, and being told that she would never find success in the field. Inspired by these daunting experiences, Andrea’s main goal as a teacher is to create a safe environment in which her students are able to understand her expectations and feel supported while achieving them. She is very specific about encouraging her students to be themselves and pushes them to be accepting young artists that are not intimidated by the criticism they might face.
The beginning ideas of her choreographic process are usually brewed at a bus stop, in the shower, or any other mundane place. Unconsciously, she will repeat the same sequence of movements coming from her body, and once she takes it to the studio, the idea is solidified. Her choreographic work is often inspired by the emotions of current events and new skills that she has recently attained. Her past experiences of being an immigrant frequently make their way into her work as an idea or emotion that inspires the piece. Overall, Andrea gathers inspiration from inner connections within herself and others and aims to share these sensitive feelings with her audience. |
